When I first saw the Samurai Umbrella on Pinterest a few years ago, it was love at first sight. I intended to buy it online, however after factoring in shipping I just couldn’t justify the purchase of an umbrella with a fancy handle at that price. So about 2 years ago when I saw it in Penang, Malaysia’s night market, I couldn’t resist getting it. The night market price point made it a no brainer, irregardless of the affordability my friend still tried to haggle it down. Talk about determination.
Bearing in mind that the one I have from the night market might not be the original Samurai Umbrella, I still find this product pretty sturdy and well made. It withstands a windy, rainy day easily unlike some umbrellas I have used in the past.
“it is a very clever idea to turn a mundane product that I usually lose, into something exciting that I cherish and seldom lose.”
Obviously the samurai sword handle and the carry pouch are the highlights here. These two pieces are quite well made at first glance but I would have loved to see more detail go into the handle. This isn’t just some budget umbrella they slapped on a fancy samurai sword handle in some gimmick. It is quite functional and gets the job of keeping you dry done with style.
If it wasn’t the curious stares, it was the surprised remarks that I would get when I used this product. Even if I didn’t get those reactions, I think I was satisfied with the Samurai Umbrella the day I got it and little could change that. I think it is a very clever idea to turn a mundane product that I usually lose, into something exciting that I cherish and seldom lose.
“This of course happened while I was pretending to hold the umbrella like a sword and my thumb pressing against the hilt as if…”
The one time I left this product at an ice cream shop, I made the extra effort to ring up and make sure they had it for me to pick up the next day. That for me says a lot about how much I like this umbrella, as it is the only umbrella I have actually made and effort to find when I left it behind at a venue. Usually I think to myself, too much effort can’t be bothered.
After some years of extensive use, there are two things I think could have been done better in the making of the Samurai Umbrella. Firstly the hilt on the umbrella handle could have been bonded on more strongly as mine broke and separated from the rest of the handle. This of course happened while I was pretending to hold the umbrella like a sword and my thumb pressing against the hilt as if I was about to draw it out of it’s sheath. I will concede, this happened after the 2 year mark, therefore me doing this action repeatedly might have more to do with breaking it.
Secondly, the sheath or umbrella cover was pierced through the bottom by the umbrella tip which now hangs out as can be seen in one of the image gallery photos. This is a product flaw I am sure.
One thing I would caution you though, is you might be pulled up by security asking you if you are wielding a weapon like what happened to me on my university campus. While it was funny, resulting in me and security guy walking away in laughter, in other high security areas things could have gotten quite tense.
I was quite surprised that airport security let me into the country with it easier than I expected. The airport security did wait with it in hand at baggage pick up, as I had to check it in, to see whose it was as they handed it to me.
Other than security concerns, you have nothing much to worry about with the product itself. It still looks as beautiful, and well made, as the day I bought it even with the hole in the sheath and the detached hilt. That is a testament to how the Samurai Umbrella is just made better. I would be surprised if more fun ideas like this didn’t appear in this product category, as I have surely seen the market for it is there from those that interacted with this product when I used it.
